One of the many things I love about being a speech therapist, is how I can be spontaneous. Today when picking up a group of students from K/1 they broke out into a game of rocks, paper, scissors. Students in this group were targeting /r/ and /sh/, so it sounded more like this, "Wocks, Papew, Scisows, Soot!" When we got upstairs, I wrote the words on a dry erase board, and we practiced saying them. Once they mastered each word individually, I built upon the phrase until they were able to say it completely. Next, I praised them and said, "It's time to level up!"
Each student had a chance to practice saying the words out of order as I pointed to them which helped them develop their motor planning. The kids were laughing, being silly, and enjoying themselves while learning. As a carryover and pragmatic activity, students played with their peers in the classroom. I seemed to be a little rusty, so I googled and found these strategies. I want to make sure I will be ready for them next time. ;)
