Speech and Language Lesson Plans for August and September focusing on Social Skills and Getting to Know You Activities
7. Getting To Know You, Social Skills, and Social Thinking Activities
-Get to Know You Jenga by Rachel Lynette: I purchased the generic Jenga game and needed to cut down the strips a little to fit tho size. The overall quality on the generic game isn't as good as the famous Jenga game we know. It easily falls over as the pieces are not cut straight and equally. I would suggest spending the few extra dollars and invest in the brand name version. If you get lucky, you may find one in your closet or at a garage sale.
"I eat my lunch, when I am at school.
I'm so very careful to follow each rule.
I sit at the table. I stay in my seat.
I use a soft voice when I'm talking. I eat!
I clean up my trash, even if it's a bunch--
This is the way that I eat my lunch! "
The printable book, "When Monsters Go to School," focuses on appropriate school behavior and compares monsters' school behavior with children's school behavior. This rhyming book is a fun way to help children remember what is expected at school."
-There Are Rules by Teaching 4 Real. This activity is better for 4th and 5th graders who may have difficulty following rules. From the author, "Establishing rules is the single most important thing you do at the beginning of the school year. This is a game that does just that. Playing a game with "no rules" sets the stage for establishing rules in your classroom. This is a great compliment to any classroom management system.
Students will discover that knowing rules and expectations from the start will set them up for success!" Sounds familiar, right? Michele Garcia Winner recommends a similar activity in which the teacher makes social mishaps (such as putting her feet on the table) and then waits for the students' reactions.
-Various Getting to Know You Activities:
-Get to Know You Worksheets by Jenna Rayburn (I snatched them while they were free and I do like them, but there are many other freebies out there so I wouldn't necessarily buy this set.) I do like that these are very comprehensive and the are only $2.00. If you are deciding between this one and In Your Shoes, definitely go with In Your Shoes. If you can afford both, then go for it!
-Back to School Foldable Mini Book by The Speech Bubble From the author, "Back to school means getting to know new students and re-connecting with old ones. This mini book will provide your students with a fun activity to start the year off right! This is a single page freebie that is in black and white to help save your precious color ink at the beginning of the year ;) "
-The Many Pieces of Me by LyndaSLP123 From the author, "Are you looking for a fun & easy get-to-know-you activity for the first day/week of school? Look no further -- Many Pieces of Me is what you want. Students fill out the many puzzle pieces to share fun facts about themselves."
-Find Someone Who... Back to School Getting to Know You Activity by Mrs. Brien From the author, "Perfect as a beginning of year, getting to know you activity, this worksheet gets students moving about and interacting with each other. Students have to find others that fit certain ‘criteria’, including who has a bike, has brown eyes, has a computer at home, enjoys reading, enjoys playing soccer, has a baby brother or sister, has a pet dog, and was born in another country" This is great for targeting Thoughts from Social Thinking. "I have a thought, you have a thought, etc.)
More to come. Stay tuned for Part 5 which will talks about how to organize all of your materials. :)
